Two Harbors, Minnesota, is a picturesque lakeside town and the county seat of Lake County. Although it is now known for its beautiful waterfront and small-town charm, the community owes much of its history to the discovery of iron ore in the region.
Iron ore became an especially important resource during World War II, when it was used to manufacture military equipment, including ships and tanks. The Duluth & Iron Range Railway (D&IR) played an important role by transporting the ore from the mines to the harbor, where it could be shipped across the Great Lakes.
Exploring the Duluth & Iron Range Depot
We visited Two Harbors on October 4, 2022, beginning our exploration at the historic Duluth & Iron Range Depot.
The depot served as an important transportation hub for passengers and freight from 1907 until 1961. Today, visitors can see historic locomotives and rail cars on display, along with interpretive signs explaining the railroad’s role in the development of the region.

I enjoyed learning how closely the town’s growth was tied to the iron ore industry and the railroad. The exhibits provide a fascinating glimpse into an era when railroads were essential to moving people and natural resources throughout northern Minnesota.
Two Harbors Lighthouse and Waterfront
From the depot, we headed toward the waterfront to explore the Two Harbors Lighthouse, historic iron ore docks, and the picturesque trails surrounding the harbor.
The growth of the iron ore industry quickly transformed the area. By 1885, approximately 225,000 tons of ore were being shipped through the harbor, then known as Agate Bay. With so much maritime traffic passing through the area, a lighthouse became necessary.
The Two Harbors Lighthouse was constructed and became operational in 1892. Today, it remains one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Walking around the waterfront, I enjoyed the combination of historic structures, Lake Superior scenery, and remnants of the area’s industrial past. It was easy to see how important the harbor had once been to the region’s economy.
Meeting Pierre the Pantsless Voyageur
While exploring Two Harbors, we also made a quick stop to see one of the town’s more unusual attractions: Pierre the Pantsless Voyageur.

The 20-foot statue has stood beside the Voyageur Motel since 1960. The motel’s owners originally brought Pierre to the property as a way to attract customers.
It’s certainly an unexpected sight and made for a fun photo stop during our day of sightseeing.
A Charming Minnesota Town
With a population of roughly 3,500 people, Two Harbors has the feel of a classic small Minnesota town. We spent a delightful day wandering through the quaint downtown streets, admiring the flower baskets hanging outside the small shops and restaurants, and exploring the town’s historic attractions.
Between the railroad depot, waterfront, iron ore docks, lighthouse, and Lake Superior scenery, Two Harbors offers a wonderful mix of history, architecture, industry, and natural beauty.

If you’re traveling along Minnesota’s North Shore, I think Two Harbors is well worth a stop. Even a short visit gives you the opportunity to step back into the town’s fascinating industrial past while enjoying its peaceful lakeside setting.
