Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel: A Scenic North Shore Stop Along Highway 61, MN

ADriving along Highway 61 on Minnesota’s North Shore is already a feast for the eyes, but on October 4, 2022, our journey became even more memorable when we reached the Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel. The crisp fall air, the shimmering blue of Lake Superior, and the rugged cliffs rising beside the road created a scene too beautiful to simply drive past. We pulled over immediately, eager to explore.

Before the tunnel existed, Highway 61 clung precariously to the cliff’s edge. This stretch was notorious for dangerous conditions—sharp curves, icy winters, and limited visibility. To improve safety, engineers carved a new passage directly through the rock. Completed in 1994, the 1,344‑foot tunnel took three years to finish and stands today as a remarkable example of North Shore engineering.

The tunnel itself is impressive, a long, smooth passage carved straight into the mountain. But what truly captivated me were the spectacular views surrounding it. A short walk leads to an overlook where Lake Superior stretches endlessly toward the horizon, its waves crashing against the rocky shoreline below. The cliffs glow in autumn light, their rugged edges softened by golden leaves and the lake’s deep blue backdrop.

Later, I learned that this viewpoint is actually part of the Gitchi‑Gami State Trail, a scenic multi‑use path that runs along portions of the North Shore. Knowing this made the stop feel even more special—one small piece of a much larger, beautifully designed trail system.

Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel is more than a quick roadside attraction. It’s a place to pause, breathe, and appreciate the dramatic landscapes that make the North Shore so unforgettable.
