Chapel of Ease, SC

Saint Helena, SC. Visit date was 3/13/2021. My friend Jackie and I stopped in to visit the ruins of this chapel. The chapels of Ease were constructed during the Colonial era for rice and cotton planters to make it easier for them to attend services since they lived far from the main churches in town. This particular chapel was built 1742-1747 on Saint Helena island near Beaufort. It was destroyed by a fire in 1886. Today all that remains are the ruins and the cemetery. Note that the walls are built with tabby, a concrete material made with oyster shells same as the fort walls in Colonial Dorchester State Historic park. The chapel was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1988. There are stories of ghost hunting this spot. You can read about them in the second article in my references.
