Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, SC

Today we explored this refuge in McBee, SC. About 90 min from us. I did not know such a place existed. The office was closed but the refuge is open from sun up to sun down. The brochure showed photos of various wildlife so I was excited. I had hoped to see the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker an endangered specie but we only heard it. I did see a few colorful birds but they were too fast for my shutter. This refuge must have strict rules for venturing out as we only saw butterflies and birds 🙂 , perhaps we did not visit in the right season to see other mammals. It was nice to be in nature nonetheless, we hiked a few trails for a total of 7.1 miles.
