Hanging Rock State Park North Carolina: An Unforgettable Spring Mountain Adventure, North Carolina

Hanging Rock State Park North Carolina is one of the most beloved outdoor destinations near Winston‑Salem, offering rugged mountain views, lush forests, and some of the best hiking in the Piedmont region. Established through the hard work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park has grown into a recreation haven with 48 miles of hiking trails, waterfalls, biking routes, paddling, swimming, fishing, and even rock climbing. It’s no surprise that Hanging Rock State Park hiking is a favorite for both locals and travelers.

On May 8, 2023, my son, his girlfriend, and I set out to tackle one of Hanging Rock State Park North Carolina’s signature routes: the Moore’s Wall Loop Trail — also known as Moore’s Knob Trail on AllTrails. This 4.5‑mile loop climbs roughly 958 feet and is rated moderate by AllTrails but strenuous by the park. The ascent was definitely steep in places, and I paused a few times to catch my breath, but overall I’d still call it a solid moderate hike. The trail is beautifully maintained, winding through hardwood forest, rocky outcrops, and spring wildflowers that brighten the path.

We chose to hike the loop clockwise, which meant descending the 600 steps from the Hanging Rock Fire Tower rather than climbing them. Whether clockwise or counterclockwise is “better” really depends on whether you prefer to go up 600 steps or down 600 steps — both options offer a workout. The Fire Tower itself is a highlight, perched atop the highest point in the park and offering sweeping, panoramic views. The weather was perfect, allowing us to spot Pilot Mountain rising in the distance, a distinctive landmark often visible from the summit.

Spring was in full bloom during our visit. Pink rhododendrons and mountain laurels lined the trail, adding bursts of color to the forest. Wildlife was active too — I was thrilled to see several deer on the descent, including one that slowed down long enough for me to snap a couple of photos. Encounters like that always make a hike feel extra special.

After finishing the loop, we rested for a few minutes near the lake and beach area, a peaceful spot where families were picnicking and kids were splashing in the water. Once we caught our breath, we continued exploring three of the park’s waterfalls: Window Falls, Hidden Falls, and Upper Cascade Falls. These short waterfall hikes are among the most popular in the park, and they were definitely crowded on this Saturday afternoon. Still, each waterfall had its own charm — shaded forest paths, cool spray drifting through the air, and the soothing sound of rushing water.

Hanging Rock waterfalls are especially beautiful in spring, when water flow is strong and the surrounding foliage is lush. Even with crowds, they were worth the visit.

We ended the day tired but happy, grateful for the time spent outdoors and the variety of experiences Hanging Rock offers. If you plan to hike to the Fire Tower, I highly recommend bringing hiking sticks — they make both the ascent and descent easier, especially on steep or rocky sections. And if you prefer quieter trails and less crowded waterfalls, consider visiting on a weekday.

If You Go

  • Moore’s Wall Loop Trail — 4.5 miles, 958 feet of gain; steep in sections but manageable with breaks.
  • Fire Tower Steps — About 600 steps; choose clockwise or counterclockwise based on your preference for climbing or descending.
  • Parking — Multiple lots near the visitor center, lake, and trailheads; weekends fill quickly.
  • Bathrooms — Restrooms available at the visitor center and lake area; none on the trail.
  • Waterfalls — Window Falls, Hidden Falls, and Upper Cascade are short, scenic hikes; expect crowds on weekends.
  • Best Time to Visit — Spring for flowers, summer for swimming, fall for foliage, weekdays for fewer crowds.
  • Trail Gear — Hiking sticks are extremely helpful on steep sections and long staircases.
