Exploring Spearfish Canyon: Two Beautiful Waterfall Hikes in South Dakota

Our group visited the breathtaking Spearfish Canyon area on June 6, 2022, and quickly fell in love with its stunning scenery. Nestled in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, Spearfish Canyon is a place of towering limestone cliffs, rushing creeks, lush forests, and picturesque waterfalls. It’s the kind of destination that leaves a lasting impression long after you’ve gone home.

During our visit, we hiked two of the canyon’s most popular waterfall trails: Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls. Both hikes are relatively short, easy, and perfect for visitors looking to experience some of the area’s natural beauty without committing to a strenuous trek.

Our first stop was Roughlock Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Black Hills. The out-and-back trail is approximately 2 miles long and follows Spearfish Creek through some spectacular scenery. The waterfall itself is unique, splitting into multiple streams as it cascades more than 50 feet over layered limestone formations.

Along the trail, we passed through a beautiful meadow traversed by Spearfish Creek. Surrounded by towering canyon walls and unusual rock formations, the landscape felt almost magical. The combination of flowing water, vibrant greenery, and dramatic cliffs created countless opportunities for photography.

We also hiked the trail to Spearfish Falls, another gem tucked within the canyon. This hike is even shorter, measuring about 1.5 miles round trip. The trail descends gently into the canyon, winding alongside a peaceful creek before reaching the waterfall.

Spearfish Falls plunges approximately 60 feet into a scenic gorge surrounded by dense vegetation and rugged rock walls. The sound of rushing water and the cool canyon air make it a peaceful destination and a wonderful place to pause and appreciate the beauty of the Black Hills.

While both waterfalls are impressive, the true highlight of the day was simply being immersed in the beauty of Spearfish Canyon itself. Every turn in the trail revealed another breathtaking view, whether it was a cascading stream, wildflowers, towering cliffs, or sunlight filtering through the trees.

Some places are difficult to describe with words, and Spearfish Canyon is one of them. Photos and videos can capture a glimpse of its beauty, but they cannot fully convey the experience of standing beside these waterfalls and taking in the scenery firsthand.
