On Saturday, June 4th, we hiked the incredible Cathedral Spires Trail in Custer State Park, and it quickly became one of our favorite hikes in the Black Hills. While the trail itself is only about 1.4 miles round trip, the journey begins long before reaching the trailhead.

Getting there means driving the legendary Needles Highway, a 14-mile scenic byway that is widely considered one of the most beautiful drives in South Dakota. The road winds through forests, around granite cliffs, and past towering rock formations that resemble giant stone needles piercing the sky. Around every curve, a new view demands your attention.

One of the highlights along Needles Highway is the scenic overlook near the famous Needles Eye Tunnel. The panoramic views are breathtaking, and you’ll likely find yourself tempted to stop frequently for photos. In fact, resisting the urge to pull over every few minutes may be the biggest challenge of the drive. The scenery is simply that impressive.

Once we arrived at the trailhead, we immediately understood why the Cathedral Spires Trail is so popular. The hike begins with a moderately challenging climb, gaining approximately 500 feet in elevation during the first section of the trail. While the ascent can get your heart pumping, it doesn’t last long. After the initial climb, the trail becomes more gradual, allowing hikers to enjoy the scenery without constantly watching their footing.

The path winds through a landscape unlike anything else in the Black Hills. Massive granite formations rise from the forest, growing larger and more dramatic with every step. The trail eventually leads hikers behind the famous Cathedral Spires, where their jagged peaks shoot skyward like giant stone teeth.

Standing beneath these towering rock formations is a humbling experience. The granite pillars seem to emerge directly from the earth, creating one of the most iconic landscapes in South Dakota. The contrast between the gray rock, green pine trees, and bright blue sky makes this a photographer’s dream destination.

Be sure to continue all the way to the end of the trail. Some of the best views are found behind the spires, where you can fully appreciate their scale and beauty. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, enjoy the scenery, and marvel at one of nature’s most impressive creations.

As if the scenery wasn’t enough, we were also treated to an unexpected wildlife encounter. On our return hike, we spotted a mountain goat perched among the rocks. It seemed completely unbothered by the hikers passing by and even appeared to pause long enough for a few photographs. Whether it was actually posing is up for debate, but it certainly made for a memorable moment.

From the stunning drive along Needles Highway to the unforgettable views of the granite spires, every part of this adventure exceeded our expectations. Despite its relatively short length, the Cathedral Spires Trail delivers some of the most rewarding scenery in Custer State Park and is a hike that should be on every visitor’s itinerary.
