McAfee’s Knob, VA

During Thanksgiving week, I visited my brother in Virginia. My niece and son accompanied me on this 8 mile strenuous hike on the Appalachian Trail (AT). I set a goal to section hike Virginia’s triple crown. McAfee’s Knob being the most photographed spot on the Appalachian Trail was quite the highlight of the trip. The trail is very popular albeit difficult. The trail climbs about 1,900ft. up the mountain, but you are rewarded by the most gorgeous views as the photos below prove. Most of the hikers were masked or kept their distance. They were courteous enough to stop on the side to let others pass. I felt very safe even though the trail was crowded. My brother had to drop us and come back to pick us up as the parking lot was full when we arrived. Be careful not to park on the road as towing is enforced. The trail is very enjoyable with mountain views along the way. I was so excited to hike on the AT, I’ve been looking forward to it for a long time.
