Spectacular Amicalola Falls: Chasing Georgia’s Highest Waterfall, GA

We visited Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia on May 21, 2021, eager to see one of the state’s most spectacular natural attractions. Covering approximately 829 acres, the park is best known for Amicalola Falls, a magnificent 729-foot waterfall that tumbles down the mountainside.

We started our visit at the visitor center, where we picked up a map showing the different trails and waterfall viewpoints. The park was established in 1940, and its name comes from a Cherokee word meaning “tumbling waters,” an especially fitting name for a park centered around such an impressive waterfall.

The waterfall is the park’s undeniable centerpiece. Water cascades down a series of rocky ledges through the forest, creating a dramatic scene that changes with the weather and season. Even from a distance, the sound of rushing water adds to the experience. I enjoyed taking my time along the trail, stopping occasionally to appreciate the scenery and photograph different sections of the falls.

We hiked part of the trail toward the falls, enjoying the forest scenery along the way. The sound of rushing water became more noticeable as we approached the waterfall, eventually leading us to the impressive cascade. Seeing the water plunge down the mountainside was the highlight of our visit.

After enjoying the falls, we walked back along the main road until we reached the entrance to the Appalachian Trail Approach Trail. This was an exciting stop for me because Amicalola Falls State Park serves as the southern gateway to the Appalachian Trail.

The Approach Trail stretches approximately 8 miles from Amicalola Falls to Springer Mountain, where the Appalachian Trail officially begins. The Appalachian Trail itself stretches roughly 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine, passing through 14 states along the way.

Even though we weren’t setting out on a multi-day Appalachian Trail adventure, it was fun to stand at the beginning of the Approach Trail and imagine the hikers who start their long journeys toward Maine from here. For serious thru-hikers, reaching this point represents the beginning of an extraordinary journey. For day hikers like us, it provided another fascinating reason to explore the park.

The surrounding landscape also makes the park more than just a waterfall destination. Located in the North Georgia mountains, the park offers a refreshing change from the lower elevations of the state. The combination of mountain scenery, dense forest, hiking trails, and rushing water creates plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy nature.

Our visit to Amicalola Falls was relatively short, but the waterfall and the connection to the Appalachian Trail made it well worth the stop. I would love to return someday with more time to explore additional trails and experience more of what this beautiful mountain park has to offer.

If you’re traveling through North Georgia, this is a park that deserves a place on your itinerary. Whether you come specifically to see the waterfall or are interested in following the footsteps of Appalachian Trail hikers, Amicalola Falls offers a memorable outdoor experience.
