Magnificent BAPS Mandir Georgia: An Awe-Inspiring Hindu Temple, GA

On Sunday, May 23, 2021, we visited the BAPS Mandir Georgia or BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir or simply in Lilburn, Georgia. The moment I caught sight of the enormous white stone temple, I was completely awestruck. Its intricate architecture and seemingly endless collection of hand-carved sculptures made it feel like stepping into another world.

BAPS Mandir Georgia

A mandir is a place of Hindu worship, and this magnificent temple sits on a 29-acre campus in Lilburn. According to the temple’s website, construction took just 17 months and involved approximately 1.3 million volunteer hours—an extraordinary testament to the dedication of the community that built it.

Everywhere I looked, there was another detail to discover. Intricately hand-carved statues seemed to gaze back at me, each depicting stories and figures with cultural and spiritual significance. The sheer amount of craftsmanship was astonishing.

For some, the mandir is a sacred place of worship. For others, it is an architectural and artistic marvel. To me, it was both—a remarkable labor of love where spirituality, craftsmanship, and art come together.

Exploring BAPS Mandir Georgia

Before entering the temple, visitors must remove their shoes as a sign of respect. Modest clothing is also required, with shoulders and knees covered.

We walked across beautiful Italian marble floors and entered two prayer rooms filled with colorful statues of revered enlightened masters. The intricate carvings, vibrant colors, and elaborate details created an atmosphere that was both peaceful and visually captivating.

I found myself constantly looking around, trying to absorb all the details. From the monumental exterior to the smallest carvings, virtually every surface seemed to tell a story.

The mandir is one of those places that photographs can only partially capture. Its scale and craftsmanship are best appreciated in person.

  1. Unbelievable that a place like that exists in the US and especially in the deep South.
