Lake Willoughby, VT

Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1967, Lake Willoughby is a natural gem in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom between the cities of Westmore and Sutton. Spanning nearly two square miles, it is Vermont’s deepest lake with depths exceeding 300ft. It offers a variety of recreational activities including swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating etc.

The North Beach on Willoughby Lake Road is one of the prime spots to take in the stunning views of Lake Willoughby. Here, visitors can admire the majestic peaks of Mt. Hora and Mt. Pisgah rising dramatically in the background, a beautiful spot for photos.

We hiked the South Shore Loop at Lake Willoughby, a hike sure to delight nature lovers. The trailhead features a spacious parking lot equipped with a few porta-potties.

The 2.1-mile hike is easy to moderate, primarily due to tree roots and rocks. The first half of the trail meanders along the picturesque lakeshore, providing lovely glimpses of water and trees. As you progress to the second half, you’re treated to a beautiful walk through the woods, where you can immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature. This combination of lakeside views and forested paths makes the South Shore Loop a perfect outing for families, casual hikers, and those looking to connect with the natural beauty of Vermont.
