Botany Bay is one of my favorite places to visit on Edisto Island, South Carolina, and I never seem to need much of an excuse to return. Over the years, I’ve brought family members and friends here, eager to share one of the most unusual and photogenic coastal landscapes in the Lowcountry.
This summer, I had the opportunity to introduce my son to Botany Bay for the first time. Even though I’ve visited many times, the landscape never feels quite the same. Changing tides, weather, light, and seasons constantly transform the shoreline, making every visit a little different.
The highlight for me is always the Boneyard Beach, where weathered tree trunks and branches rise from the sand and shallow water. These hauntingly beautiful trees are the remains of a maritime forest that was gradually exposed as the shoreline changed. Their bleached appearance creates an almost otherworldly landscape and provides endless opportunities for photography.
Walking along the beach with my son made this visit especially memorable. It’s always fun to see a place you’ve visited repeatedly through someone else’s eyes, and Botany Bay certainly didn’t disappoint. The combination of the ocean, sand, driftwood, and unusual trees creates a peaceful setting that feels worlds away from the busier South Carolina beaches.
One of the reasons I keep returning is that there is always something new to photograph. The shoreline can look dramatically different depending on the tide, and the soft coastal light can completely change the mood of the landscape. For photographers, it is one of those places where you can easily spend hours wandering and looking for interesting compositions.
Botany Bay is also a place where it’s worth slowing down. Rather than rushing through for a few photographs, take time to walk the shoreline, listen to the waves, and appreciate the natural beauty around you.
I’ve visited Botany Bay with several relatives and friends over the years, and each trip has created its own memories. This visit with my son was simply the latest chapter in a long list of memorable visits.

Wonderful pictures take me back. But one thing was missing or maybe I should say several things? The different shells that were placed all over the trees, roots, Wood etc. could it be that they were washed off during the storm?
