Santee National Wildlife Refuge made a beautiful first impression on me during my first visit. As soon as you cross over Lake Marion on the way to the refuge, you know you’re in for a scenic experience. The expansive water views immediately set the tone for a peaceful day surrounded by nature.

I visited during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the visitor center was closed when I arrived. Although I couldn’t go inside, I still enjoyed exploring the grounds. The rangers had planted a lovely variety of flowers around the property, adding bright pops of color to the peaceful setting.

While walking around the visitor center, I noticed turtles swimming in the lake nearby. It was a simple but memorable wildlife encounter and a reminder that you don’t have to go far to find nature at the refuge.

After exploring the visitor center grounds, I headed to the Indian Mound, another interesting feature of the refuge. I parked nearby and set out on the nature trail.

The trail offered a completely different perspective of the refuge, taking me through beautiful natural surroundings with swamp views along the way. The peaceful landscape, still water, and surrounding vegetation made it an enjoyable place to slow down and appreciate the scenery.

One of the things I enjoyed most about Santee National Wildlife Refuge was the variety of experiences packed into a relatively simple visit. From the expansive views of Lake Marion to the gardens around the visitor center and the quiet trails near the Indian Mound, there was always something interesting to see.

The refuge is a wonderful destination for anyone who enjoys nature, wildlife, photography, and easy walks. I especially enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to explore a landscape so different from the more developed areas nearby.

Since this was my first visit, I left feeling like I had only seen a small part of what Santee National Wildlife Refuge has to offer. I would definitely return to explore more of its trails, wetlands, and wildlife habitats.
