Unforgettable Wateree Heritage Preserve: A Peaceful Escape Into South Carolina’s Wild, SC

Wateree Heritage Preserve was our destination in April 2020 when my son and I headed to Eastover, South Carolina, for a day of hiking and exploring. I was especially interested in seeing the overlook and discovering some of the preserve’s trails.

Managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), Wateree Heritage Preserve offers four hiking trails and several opportunities to experience the area’s natural beauty. While the trails provide some limited views of the river, the real appeal is the chance to immerse yourself in a quiet, largely undeveloped landscape.

One of our goals was to find the overlook, which can be reached by driving along Cooks Mountain Road. After taking in the view, we spent some time hiking through the preserve.

The trail conditions were a little challenging in places. We encountered swampy sections and quite a few fallen trees, but fortunately, we were able to maneuver around the obstacles and continue our hike. We chose the Green Trail, which gave us plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding forest.

What made the day memorable wasn’t necessarily a spectacular viewpoint or a challenging hike—it was the wildlife and peacefulness we encountered along the way.

We spotted what we believe were eagles soaring overhead, along with a snake and a frog. Colorful butterflies fluttered through the vegetation, while birds filled the forest with their songs. At times, it felt as though we had stepped away from the outside world completely.

I love hikes where nature provides the entertainment, and this was definitely one of those days. There was no need for an elaborate itinerary. We simply walked, watched, listened, and enjoyed being surrounded by nature.

The preserve reminded me that some of the best outdoor experiences aren’t always found on the most famous trails. Sometimes, a quiet path through the woods, the sound of birds, and an unexpected wildlife sighting can make for a truly memorable adventure.

If you’re looking for a peaceful place to hike in the Columbia-area region and don’t mind less-developed trails, Wateree Heritage Preserve is worth exploring. Just be prepared for potentially muddy or swampy conditions and obstacles such as fallen trees.
