My son and I headed out to explore the trails in Sunol, California on April 15, 2026—my final day exploring Northern California and Southern Oregon . It became the perfect farewell hike. Even the drive in felt like a gift; I kept asking him to pull over so I could soak in the scenery and try to capture its beauty through my lens. The day was stunning, with a brilliant blue sky mirrored in the water, framed by rolling green hills and clusters of yellow wildflowers.

Roughly 29 miles from San Jose, the 6,858‑acre Sunol Regional Wilderness Preserve sits just north of Silicon Valley but feels a world apart, trading the tech buzz for quiet expanses of verdant hillsides, colorful spring blooms, and sweeping open skies. It is the perfect location to declutter one’s mind while enjoying stunning scenery. Every direction I looked a new nature painting materialized in front of my eyes.

We began our hike along Canyon View Trail, connecting to the popular Little Yosemite Trail—a scenic 4.4-mile route with roughly 488 feet of elevation gain. The hike was easy to moderate, making it accessible and enjoyable for most skill levels. Though I took my hiking stick with me, I did not need it. I do recommend taking a camera or mobile phone as picturesque photo opportunities abound at nearly every turn along the trail.
From the very start, the trail delivered sweeping vistas and a sense of calm that only nature can provide. Mid-April proved to be an ideal time to visit; the preserve was alive with color and movement, enhanced by gentle breezes and warm sunlight. Wildflowers decorated the hillsides in soft bursts of white, purple, yellow, and orange. I was surprised that we only encountered a handful of hikers. I had expected the stunning scenery and perfect weather to attract a crowd.

Wildlife sightings added to the magic of the day. We spotted ravens gliding overhead, heard the rhythmic tapping of woodpeckers and saw one on a bare tree branch, caught glimpses of wild turkeys moving through the brush. Ground squirrels darted in and out of view, while grazing cattle dotted the landscape. After climbing a gentle hill, we encountered a small group of brown cows ambling directly along the trail. We slowed our pace and gave them space, carefully passing by as they regarded us with mild curiosity—a memorable and uniquely pastoral moment.

A nearby sign offered insight into their presence. Spanish missionaries first introduced cattle to this region in the late 1700s, and they’ve been part of the landscape ever since. Today, much of the herd belongs to local ranchers who lease grazing land within the preserve—families who have worked these hills for generations. Their cattle play an important role in land management, helping reduce wildfire risk and maintain the health of the grassland ecosystem. I couldn’t help but smile at the sign’s gentle reminder: “Please do not bother the livestock—they are working!”
As the photos below can attest, this hike was more than just a walk through nature—it was a fitting, serene conclusion to my Northern California visit, shared with my son and filled with simple, unforgettable moments. I highly recommend visiting Sunol Regional Wilderness preserve.
