Hiking Phinizy Swamp Nature Park: An Easy, Wildlife-Rich Georgia Adventure, GA

I visited Phinizy Swamp Nature Park—just beyond the South Carolina–Georgia border—in January 2026 with a group of friends. This was my second time exploring the park. My first visit, in June 2020, was a lush, vibrant experience filled with dense greenery, colorful wildflowers, butterflies, dragonflies, and abundant birdlife. In contrast, January revealed a quieter, more subdued beauty. While waterfowl and alligators were still plentiful, the landscape was defined by muted browns and winter stillness rather than summer’s vivid greens. I am republishing the 2020 post to include both sets of photos.

About Phinizy Swamp Nature Park

Artifacts found in the park reveal that the area used to be inhabited by Native Americans. It is named after Ferdinand Victor François Phinizy, an Italian businessman who recognized the opportunities provided by the nearby Savannah River and settled there in 1778. Phinizy Swamp encompasses roughly 7,000 acres, with about 1,100 acres preserved as the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. The park’s mission is “to provide leadership for sustainable watersheds and economic vitality through research, education and by connecting people with nature” [Phinizy Web Site] . In addition to freshwater ecosystems research, the park offers educational opportunities through courses, , summer camps, field trips, toddler activities etc.

About our hike

Using AllTrails for navigation, we hiked the Equalization Pond Loop trail, logging 5.6 miles with virtually no elevation gain. Despite the season, wildlife sightings were plentiful. We spotted egrets, ibises, cormorants, alligators, turtles, ducks, as well as a scattering of other birds along the way. Visiting on a weekday added to the peaceful experience—we had the park almost entirely to ourselves, crossing paths with only one mother and her toddler during the entire hike.It was a beautiful day, and the photos capture just how scenic the hike truly is.
