On September 9, 2024, we visited Roxborough State Park, our second hiking destination of the day. By the time we arrived, the Colorado sun had warmed the afternoon, but the stunning scenery made every step worthwhile.
We chose the Lyons Overlook Trail, a relatively easy 1.7-mile round-trip hike that rewards visitors with spectacular views. The trail is well maintained with gentle grades, making it an excellent option for hikers of all experience levels. Almost immediately, we were surrounded by the park’s dramatic red sandstone formations, their brilliant colors glowing against the deep blue Colorado sky. Towering rock fins rose from the landscape, creating a scene that felt both ancient and awe-inspiring.
As we climbed gradually toward the overlook, we paused often to admire the unique geology and the peaceful surroundings. Roxborough State Park is known for its remarkable rock formations, which were created millions of years ago by the same geologic forces that formed nearby Red Rocks Park and the Flatirons near Boulder. The park is also a designated National Natural Landmark, recognized for both its geological significance and its diverse ecosystems.
Reaching Lyons Overlook, we were rewarded with sweeping views across the park’s rugged landscape. From this vantage point, the towering red rocks, rolling foothills, and distant mountain vistas combined to create one of the most picturesque scenes of our Colorado trip. It was the perfect place to stop, take photographs, and simply soak in the beauty of nature.
Although this was a relatively short hike, it left a lasting impression. Roxborough State Park is a hidden gem that offers incredible scenery without the crowds found at many of Colorado’s more famous parks. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk or a more challenging adventure, it’s well worth adding to your Colorado itinerary.
If You Go
Wildlife: Keep an eye out for mule deer, wild turkeys, hawks, songbirds, and, if you’re lucky, foxes or black bears from a safe distance.
Location: About one hour south of Denver near Littleton, Colorado.
Park Size: Approximately 3,413 acres of protected landscapes.
Established: Opened as a Colorado State Park in 1987.
Entrance Fee: At the time of our visit, admission was $10 per vehicle plus $4 per person for a daily pass. If you plan to visit several Colorado State Parks, an annual pass may be the better value.
Trails: More than 15 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy nature walks to longer, more strenuous hikes.
Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures, but the park is beautiful year-round.
Bring: Water, sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy walking shoes. There is very little shade along many of the trails.
