Exploring Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, Spain

We visited Barcelona for a few days in March 2024. We stayed in the Gothic Quarter in a wonderful hotel near the Cathedral of Barcelona. On Sunday March 10th, our last afternoon in Barcelona, we decided to explore the Gothic Quarter on foot by walking from our hotel to the waterfront. The city is peppered with picturesque landmarks! I kept stopping to take pictures of historic buildings and churches, interesting statues, colorful murals, beautiful plazas and parks …. The gothic Quarter is the historic center of Barcelona. We walked by many small streets that led us to larger squares ornate with statues, passing very old churches. I read that many of the buildings’ facades were restored to Neo-Gothic architecture in preparation for the 1929 International exhibit, an effort that continued through the 1960s. The Barcelona Cathedral is one such building. As you peruse the photos below, please make sure to note the landmarks’ names and brief info in the caption.

As we approached the waterfront, we heard a cacophony of musical instruments and loud cheering. It turns out we had happened upon the Barcelona Marathon! We stopped and cheered on the runners for a bit snapping a few photos, the vibe was very uplifting.

What fun it was to walk around this ancient city, admiring its cool architecture that mixes old with modern, watching street performers, admiring street art and appreciating its beautiful parks full of tourists and locals enjoying a beautiful Sunday afternoon outdoors. I especially loved the amazing Font De La Cascada (fountain) in the northern corner of Parc de la Ciutadella which was designed by Josep Fontsere and completed in 1888. In addition to the large fountain, the Parc de la Ciutadella also includes the parliament palace, a small lake, a zoo, a museum of natural science, the Castle of three dragons, and a greenhouse.
