My son and I spent an afternoon exploring the stunning Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in May 2025. It completely lived up to its reputation. Although parking was a bit of a challenge—we eventually found a spot about half a mile away on Cabrillo Highway—the effort was well worth it. The reserve’s popularity is no surprise once you experience the breathtaking oceanfront vistas it offers.
We hiked a 5.3-mile stretch of the Point Lobos Loop Trail, a mostly flat route hugging the dramatic shoreline. Starting clockwise on the South Plateau Trail, we were greeted early on by sweeping ocean views that accompanied us the rest of the way. As we connected through various trail segments, each new vista felt more awe-inspiring than the last—truly a photographer’s dream and a hiker’s paradise.
We spotted a variety of coastal birds, including pelicans and cormorants, along with marine mammals like seals and sea lions. While whales, dolphins, and orcas are known to pass through seasonally, we weren’t lucky enough to see them on this visit
