I absolutely loved the Basin Trail New Hampshire! Nestled in the heart of the White Mountains, the Basin is a hidden gem that transforms into a magical wonderland during the fall. While many might hesitate to embark on a hike during a rainy day, a trek to The Basin on such a day can be an unforgettable experience. The misty atmosphere, enhanced by vibrant fall foliage and rushing waterfalls, creates a surreal landscape that feels straight out of a fairy tale.

Arriving at The Basin
Located just off I-93 in Franconia Notch State Park, The Basin is easily accessible and well-marked. As you step out of your car, the cool, crisp autumn air greets you, carrying the earthy aroma of rain-soaked leaves. We hiked this trail on October 7th, 2024. The light drizzle amplified the colors of the surrounding forest, with fiery reds, golden yellows, and deep oranges.
The path leading to The Basin is short and easy, making it suitable for all skill levels. Restrooms are available near the medium sized parking lot. Despite the rain, the trail remains manageable, though sturdy, waterproof footwear and a hiking stick would be essential to navigate the damp terrain safely and avoid slipping on wet leaves especially if wandering on the non-paved sections of trail.
Hiking the Basin Trail New Hampshire
I loved this beautiful hike even though it was raining when we arrived. Since we were visiting New Hampshire from South Carolina, we did not have the luxury of returning on a dry day so we put on our rain coats and forged ahead. The Basin itself is a naturally carved granite pothole, created over the years by the swirling waters of the Pemigewasset River. On a rainy day, the water rushes with more vigor, filling the air with a soothing, thunderous melody.
Beyond The Basin, the trails wind through the forest, leading to smaller waterfalls and serene river views. Each turn reveals new perspectives of nature’s artistry, with leaves carpeting the ground in a mosaic of colors. The interplay of rain and light creates glistening surfaces, from tree trunks to stones, enhancing the forest’s natural beauty.
Hiking in the rain may not be everyone’s first choice, but it offers unique rewards. With fewer visitors braving the elements, the trails feel more secluded, allowing for moments of solitude and reflection. Pack a lightweight rain jacket, and don’t forget to bring a waterproof bag for your essentials to stay dry and comfortable.
For photography enthusiasts, a rainy fall day provides endless opportunities. The overcast sky diffuses the light, eliminating harsh shadows and making colors pop. Water droplets on leaves, reflections in puddles, and the dynamic flow of waterfalls offer compelling subjects.
