Let’s Pick Daffodils, SC

It’s that time of year when the beautiful flowers with their soft smell open up and permeate the air, their yellow splash of color announcing spring. My friend Jackie and I had planned to travel to the lowcountry last year at this time, but Covid hit in March. We had no idea what could or what couldn’t be done back then so we cancelled our plans. It is hard to believe that a whole year has gone by since then!

I am glad we decided to go this year. It was fun to pick the gorgeous flowers and watch how much fun old and young people were having selecting the best blooms or snapping Easter photos. I met a beautiful family who kindly granted me permission to photograph them. Aren’t they simply sweet?!

We each selected about sixty flowers that made two gorgeous bouquets. We stored them in a cooler for the long trip back home. I gave my mother one bouquet and the other took a place of honor in my living room. I am including a wonderful poem brought to my attention by my friend Habib. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I love South Carolina! There is so much to explore in this beautiful state. The more lovely places I visit, the more new places I hear about and add to my list.

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
